Exam FAQs

Q: Is the exam Internet-based?
A: The AKBD examination is administered through CASTLE Worldwide. CASTLE's testing system, PASS, is an Internet-based testing system. Internet-based testing is very similar to computer-based testing in that the exams are delivered, answers are noted, and scoring is accomplished all via computer. The difference is that with Internet-based testing, the examination data is delivered via a secure, password-protected website. Internet-based delivery enhances examination security because data is not retained at the test site (no data is recorded to the actual computer being used for testing).

Q: Where can I take the exam?
A: The AKBD exam is administered during an established 15-day period at computerized testing facilities managed by CASTLE Worldwide. The AKBD test is administered at over 150 testing sites in the United States, and available testing dates and times vary by location.

Q: What is the date for the upcoming AKBD exam?
A: To find out the latest dates for the exam, please view our website or contact NKBA Customer Service at (800) THE-NKBA or .

Q: How do I schedule my exam date and location?
A: As soon as you receive a Notice to Schedule (NTS) from CASTLE, it is recommended that you access the scheduling web link to schedule your appointment. Scheduling is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Waiting to schedule your test appointment may significantly limit the date/time availability at the test center of your choice. All available testing locations and dates are presented to you on the scheduling web link. This site enables you to search for testing sites by city and state. Please be sure to enter the date range of the testing window for your exam. You then have real-time access to what sites are available to you and the number of seats currently left in that site.

Q: Is the NKBA AKBD exam the only exam that will be given at these test sites during this period?
A: No. The test sites also administer other exams for other associations and agencies at the same time. That is why it is so important that candidates register at the site of their choice as soon as they receive their notice to schedule from CASTLE Worldwide.

Q: How many questions will be on the AKBD exam?
A: The exam consists of 200 questions.

Q: How long is the exam?
A: Candidates have a three-hour time limit in which to complete the AKBD exam. In the IBT environment, this starts after the candidate indicates he/she is ready.

Q: What does a computer-based test look like?
A: Candidates who would like to see what a IBT looks like can visit here for a demonstration on CASTLE's proprietary examination delivery software, PASS (Proctored Assessment System). CASTLE is the organization that administers our exams.

Q: When are results of the exam available?
A: They are available almost immediately, before you leave the testing facility.

Q: Once I view my results and I have passed, am I certified?
A: No. You must wait for official confirmation from the NKBA accompanied by an invoice for your certification fee. Once this is paid, you may begin using the appellation.

Q: How many times can I take the exam during this "window"?
A: A candidate will be allowed to register for only one exam during the exam period.

Q: What if I am taking the CKD/CBD exam? Do I have to take it on two different days?
A: If you are registered for the CKD/CBD exam, you must schedule the academic exam on a separate date during the test window. The practical exam is always administered on the first day of the testing window. You may not schedule both exams on the same day.
