Understanding Make-up Air Codes:Understanding Make-up Air Codes:Thu, May 7, 2015 @ 6:00 AM to Thu, May 7, 2015 @ 8:00 AM

Understanding Make-up Air Codes – If your kitchen design includes a range hood exceeding  400 CFM you may be required to provide an incoming, instantaneous and equal supply of fresh air into the home.  Some states and Canada have a lower CFM requirement.  Make-up air is discussed in the NKBA Kitchen Planning Guideline #19.  Not understanding IRC M 1503.1 could cost you a delay in the completion of your project and possibly an unexpected expense to you or your client.  Objectives:  Understand the need for resupplying the home with fresh air; determine if your installations require the addition of make-up air; be able to discuss options for make-up air with your HVAC contractors and clients.

Presenter:  David H. Newton, CMKBD, entered the kitchen and bath industry in 1970.  He focused on design and sales to consumers, developers, builders and homeowners.  In 1986 he became Director of Training for NKBA.  After three years with NKBA, David and his wife, Glenda, formed David Newton and Associates specializing in the education of kitchen and bath designers throughout north America.  In 2008 David was inducted into the kitchen and bath industry Hall of Fame.  During his 44-years David has trained thousands of designers and helped many reach their certification goals.  He currently maintains his relationship with NKBA as a teaching professional nationally.  Locally he serves on the Board of Advisors for Consumer Sciences at Carson-Newman University.

Knoxville, TN Meeting: “How to Keep Yourself Out of Court”Knoxville, TN Meeting: “How to Keep Yourself Out of Court”Tue, Sep 30, 2014 to Tue, Sep 30, 2014

Mediation or Arbitration?

What are your options when disagreements arise between you and your customers/clients?  You could sue or be sued in Small Claims Court (Court of General Sessions in Tennessee) where a Judge makes the decision.  But does the Judge hearing your case really understand the Kitchen and Bath Industry?  This program explores the differences between going to Court verses having your disagreement settled by mediation or arbitration.  David will discuss your options and share with you an actual case that was on the fast track to a Tennessee Courtroom.  At the last minute both sides decided to settle out of court when they were presented with evidence from an expert witness representing our industry.

Speaker, David H. Newton, CMKBD, is a 41 year veteran of the kitchen and bath industry.  He has participated in the CDRS Training Program.  Construction Dispute Resolution Services specializes in Mediation and Arbitration for the construction industry.  David will show us how to minimize our exposure to legal action by using NKBA Forms and proper documentation of our plans.  This program is not intended to offer legal advice but rather options you have when disagreements arise.
