The NKBA Reveals 2017 Design Competition Winners

More than 20 outstanding kitchen and bath professionals honored at the Design Competition and Industry Awards Ceremony held during KBIS 2017

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (JANUARY 10, 2017) — The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) recently announced the winners of the 2017 NKBA Design Competition at the Design Competition and Industry Awards ceremony held January 9 at Epcot’s World Showplace in Orlando. The awards event, held prior to the opening day of the 2017 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS®), opened its doors to nearly 400 industry professionals. More than 20 individuals were honored across six main kitchen and bath categories and six specialty categories.

“The NKBA Design Competition offers our members the opportunity to demonstrate their design abilities and stand out in the industry,” said NKBA CEO Bill Darcy. “With an emphasis on innovative concepts and creative expression, this competition communicates the value of professional design to consumers and the industry at large.”

Lori Carroll from Lori Carroll & Associates, Tuscon, Ariz., won the Best Bath award for her modern and sleek master bath design. In addition to this award, Carroll was also named the winner in the Large Bath category (first place) and the Powder Room category (first and third place).

For her Best Bath design, Carroll incorporated contemporary materials with a neutral color scheme, an oval bathtub for an inviting focal point, metallic glazed tiles with a solid bronze liner, and floating shelves for practical storage.

Elma Yvette Gardner, CMKBD, CID, from By Design Studio in Davis, Calif., secured the Best Kitchen award for her stunning, contemporary kitchen which incorporated abundant natural light, a warm and vibrant color palette, porcelain tile floors, and comfortable island seating.  Gardner’s design also won first place in the Large Kitchen category.

For the 2017 NKBA Design Competition, a panel of six, certified industry experts evaluated hundreds of entries from across the United States and Canada. All participating projects were scored on various criteria, including safety and ergonomics, elements and principles of design, design planning, creativity and presentation. The 2017 NKBA Design Competition judging panel included Kathleen F. Donohue, CMKBD; Christine K. Dreith, CMKBD; Jennifer L. Gilmer, CKD; Mark Keiser, CKD, CBD; Carl A. Smith, CKD, CBD; and Mark T.
