NKBA Hours/CEU: 0 NKBA Hours / 0.1 CEU for Chapter Meetings

Course Description
During a one-hour presentation, Corey S. Klassen, CKD, CBD will identify the key points to consider in designing bathrooms for the luxury market. The course will provide and understanding of the spa and luxury experiences of today's bathrooms. Designing with technology in the bathroom, whether it is lighting, sound, or home automation, has its design challenges and we will look at solutions to better integrate new multi-media in the bathroom. We will take a brief look at how space planning considerations and building code consideration need not be a challenge in beautiful spaces, while reviewing user engagement of "bathers" in the bathroom. Lastly, we will conclude with a gallery of some award-wining luxury bathrooms.

Learning Objectives
During this course, we will:
  1. Present case study examples of home spas in plan view so that designers can apply their creativity in an organized way when challenged by a luxury bathroom
  2. Discuss what planning consideration must be evaluated when integrating steam showers, large soaking tubs, and technology into the bathroom
  3. Explain how engagement with user interfaces of sight and sound experiences can create the overall relaxation atmosphere in the luxury space

Ever wonder why the sink is located under the window? Where (or what) was the first garbage disposal? What is Napoleon Bonaparte’s connection to the Mason jar? Why a stove is called a stove? Ten thousand years ago we were Locavores. Today, we have a new culture of “Foodies” and seven in every ten households now have some sort of garden.

This one and a half hour presentation is a brief journey through our human history examining how patterns in our culture have affected how we function in our homes today and how we will use them in the future. Key historical events have brought about technological advancements that changed how we live. Now the Foodavore movement is changing how we shop, prepare, cook and store food ultimately changing the function of the kitchen. In this presentation we will look at some fun and interesting facts about the evolution of appliances and the shape of the kitchen, how we evolved from the original “open plan” to the open plan concept we embrace today as a popular solution to contemporary living.
